The first thing people always ask when I tell them I'm a Hypnotherapist is: "Can you make me cluck like a chicken?" My response: "Not unless you want to."
The nature of hypnosis is such that the hypnotized individual never loses the ability to refuse a suggestion. Therefore, if a hypnotized person hears a suggestion to which they have a strong objection, they can simply refuse to carry it through.
Most people first experience hypnosis as I did, in the form of a show. These shows are a great way to demonstrate the power and potential uses of hypnosis to a large number of people in an entertaining fashion. However, after seeing these shows, many people view hypnosis as a form of control or manipulation, and are hesitant to be hypnotized themselves in fear of "losing control" and doing something silly or embarrassing. This is the farthest thing from the truth.
